The yell felt like it could shake the whole house, jarring the young woman out of her deep thoughts, causing her to turn from the window just as an explosion came to her left. The plate hit the wall with such a force that it just shattered, spraying white chips over her as she gave a strangled gasp and jumped back while lifting an arm up to hide her face. It didn’t stop the smack upside the back of her head that brought almost instant tears to her eyes. The damn woman always knew how to catch her just right that it made her ears ring and her whole head buzz for a moment.
"You’re useless! I told you to wash the dishes, but that one had stains on it.” The older woman hissed, her upper lip curling as she sneered at the girl, the cigarette dangling from her lips until she plucked it away. Sarah looked down at the plate, biting back the snide question of asking how the woman would know as it was broken now.
“I’m sorry.” The words came out breathless and monotone, an automatic response that didn’t even have any meaning anymore as she started to lean down. Her stepmother’s fingers curled into her arm, like cold steely bands that had Sarah wincing as she was yanked back a bit.
“You little snot, you getting mouthy?” Sarah could smell the cheap whiskey on her stepmother’s breath, washing over her features and causing her to wrinkle her nose as she felt her empty stomach roll just a bit. There had been supper, till her stepmother threw a fit about it not being cooked right and threw it out for the dogs. It just had been non stop that day. It seemed her father was going to miss his child support yet again, though he hadn’t paid in years, and it pissed Sarah’s stepmother off. Enough that she spent the last of their money on booze and smokes, both of which she had started the night before. Now she was running out and she was getting mean.
“No.” Sarah shook her head, clenching her jaw as she dared a peek at her stepmother who released her quickly and shook her head. It seemed she was going to leave her alone, turning and stumbling back towards the kitchen. Sarah let out a sigh as she leaned down to start picking up the glass when suddenly her stepmother turned back, the sudden sound of her voice making her jump and a piece of glass sliced through her finger.
“You’re a worthless piece of trash and you know what, I’m done looking after you. So you get yourself out.” She sneered.
It should have made Sarah happy, should have thrilled her but it didn’t. It filled her with a tiny bit of anger as she straightened, looking at the woman as she blinked. “You can’t throw me out, I’ve got no where to go. This...this is my home!” It was her mother’s home, she had been here since she was a baby. Her stepmother had been the intruder, part of the reason her father left besides the fact that he was a drunkard and a deadbeat.
“Not no more. I want you out.” The older woman sneered, the cigarette glowing as she took a drag and then started forward. Her eyes were cold and hard and though she stumbled, she moved with determination. Sarah looked at the cigarette and she wondered if her stepmother was going to hold the glowing cherry to her arm again. Instead of cowering, her eyes narrowed as she looked up at her stepmother and finally just snapped. She felt the power rushing through her, mingled with the anger and the hate she felt. As her stepmother got closer and closer, she felt the pressure building until it finally just had to be released.
“I wish you’d just die!”
She wasn’t sure what happened but her voice had deepened, reverberations sounding like echoes of a thousand voices threaded with her own and she felt the power push at her stepmother. The older woman looked like she had been slapped, her head pulled back and her eyes widening to the point that they looked abnormally big in her face. Sarah blinked as she pulled back, her own eyes widening a bit at the look on her stepmother’s face as the cigarette fell from her fingers and then suddenly she just collapsed. Just fell straight backwards.
She wasn’t sure how fast the fire had started because suddenly it raged all around her. She remembered nudging at her stepmother, trying to tell her to move but the woman wouldn’t. She just laid there on her back, staring up at the ceiling blindly. Sarah swallowed thickly as she moved back, feeling the heat pour over her as the flames licked higher and higher, consuming her home. She turned, just like she had before, and without a look back she hurried out of the house. She got a couple feet away when suddenly the cold fingers curled around her arm like a cold steel band to whip her around.
Her stepmother’s face was charred and melted, looking inhuman as she snarled, baring the blackened teeth and the gaping holes were her nose was flared just a bit. “You killed me, Eden, and you’ll get him killed to.”
Somewhere someone screamed.
---
It wasn’t a scream, just a tiny whimper that caught in Eden’s throat and choked her just a bit as she sat up. She was almost disorientated for a moment as her eyelashes fluttered and she looked around, her throat dry and her eyes burning. Like she had been in a fire. She wasn’t though, she was on the couch in Alex’s apartment where she must have fallen asleep and he didn’t want to disturb her. She could see him sleeping in a chair nearby though, probably watching over her just to make sure that she was okay.
She felt her stomach clench and her throat tighten as she looked at him, the words from her dead stepmother ringing in her ear, echoing her own fear. No, she wouldn’t get him killed. She would protect him, use her powers to make sure he lived. She would use her power to kill others if need be. She laid back on the couch, curling on her side as she kept her eyes on him and captured her bottom lip between her teeth.
She would just watch him for awhile and make sure he was okay. While trying to ignore the fear that curled around her heart and tried to banish the images of her stepmother out of her head.
Someday she’d have to tell him.
That she was a murderer. A murderer named Sarah Ellis..
Eden quietly tested the handle to Isaac's apartment, turning it gently to let herself into the loft. Her eyes found him quickly where he worked on the easel, his brush moving furiously over the paper as she moved towards her. Relieved. "Isaac." She murmured, moving to touch his back.
"You ran away." He said before she got the chance and when she moved to his side, she saw that his eyes were the tell tale white that they got when he was caught in a trance. But she had never seen him able to talk while in one.
"Isaac, I wanted to...."
"You ran away, Eden." Isaac continued, the painting growing darker and darker but she paid it no mind. She was confused as she watched as thick blood started to roll down his nose and drip off the tip to land in the paint he was holding. "You ran away and he got out. He got out....and he killed me."
When she looked up, she saw why there was more and more blood running down his face. The top of his head was gone, the skull cut open and the brain gone. She felt the scream lock in her throat and she whirled away, just so she didn't have to look anymore. She ended up whirling into a solid frame and when she looked up, Sylar was smirking down at her.
"Hello Sarah."
"Papa, you should speak to him again." Eden followed behind Chandra, a light frown on her mouth as she glanced over at the door through which Sylar had slammed his way out of after a rather heated discussion with Chandra. She had been in the kitchen and it seemed the tall man had been unaware she was there. She could understand his anger since it seemed Chandra Suresh had stopped listening to him.
"Its not beneficial anymore." Chandra mused out loud, seeming distracted as he looked around over his desk for something, patting the pockets of his suit jacket before glancing up at the sound of jingling keys. His smile grew warm as he looked to the pixie girl who stood there, holding his keys and jingling them a bit to catch his attention.
"I think you upset him though." She tilted her head as she passed him over the keys once he reached her.
"He'll be fine, he's a big boy." Chandra remarked, nodding, "Plus I thought you didn't care for him."
There was a slight pause, a hesitation from her as she tilted her head to the other side and seemed to consider it. "He's...odd. But he's just trying to figure out where he fits in." She could see that Gabriel just wanted to fit in, the name change had been a hint of it. God, if anyone could understand the power that came from choosing a name, it was her. "I think he just feels like you're not listening."
"Hmm, I'm sorry?" Chandra glanced up and then nodded, "Alright, I will think about it but right now," He moved over, kissing her cheek fondly. "I have to get to work."
"Fine." Eden gave him a small but warm smile as she walked him to the door of his apartment, "I'll just finish straightening up for you. Have a good shift." She stood in the doorway of his apartment, watching Papa disappear down the hall without realizing that it would be the last time she saw him alive.

"Eden, can you bring me my notebook? Its slow and I've got some notes I want to take down." Chandra's voice was warm, his accented tone a comfort to her as it floated over the cell phone that she had pressed to her ear.
"Of course, is it on your desk?" She moved over to the desk, looking down as she started to move piles of papers to find the little black notebook that he scribbled in all the time. She found Gabriel's folder but she moved it aside, curious but she would find time to read it again later. Had been over it once or twice.
"I think I left it on my dresser." Chandra sounded a bit distracted once more.
"Alright, I'll be there right away." Then she paused, "Are you okay, Papa Suresh?"
"Hmm, yes. Just thought I saw someone." A pause as well and then he chuckled, "Just an old man's wandering mind. I'll see you in a little bit." Then he hung up.

Eden clenched her jaw as she pressed herself back against the cold wall of the building, the shadows thick over her as she tried to ignore the repulsive smell of the dumpster that she was currently tucking herself against. Her entire body was shaking as she pressed her lips in a thin line and even through the blur of tears, she recognized the predatory lope of the thin man as he stalked by. She could see his hands were curled into fists, the quick pants of breath as he hurried towards the mouth of the alley and would disappear.
With weak knees and trembling hands, Eden stepped forward, no longer smell the garbage as her senses were adapted to the stench now but that didn't stop the feel of the bile rising up. Swallowing it down, she turned her head slowly and looked at the silent cab at the end of the alley. Clutching the black book, her eyelashes fluttered as she moved through the shadows, the mist of the alley feeling like cold slime against her bare arms as her breathing got a little more shallow.
Coming to the driver's side, the book slipped from her fingers as the tiny whimper managed to escape her. Her fingers were shaking as she lifted them, touching the cool pane of the glass as though to slide them through the blood but the glass separated them. She could see the shadow of Chandra's head, definitely malformed and caved in now. There was too much blood for him to have survived. Her fingers slide down the glass and then dropped away as she sucked in a shaky breath. She looked down the alley, half expecting to see the tall man with the baseball cap pulled low over his eyes but he wasn't there.
Licking her lips slowly, she pulled out her cellphone and swallowed the bile back once more as she dialed a number. Then she pressed the phone to her ear, turning away from the bloodbath. "Its Eden." A slight hitch to her breath, "Sylar just killed Chandra Suresh."
